Character Information
Name: Magdalene "Blind Mag" Defoe
Journal Name:
keptinbondage
Fandom: Repo! The Genetic Opera
PB: Sarah Brightman
Character background: Magdalene Defoe was born without the ability to see. It was only through her dearest friend Marni that she ever received sight. Mag was nineteen when Marni began to date Rottissimo Largo, who at that point was the head of GeneCO, a very prominent organization that provided organ transplants for a price. Introduced to Rotti by Marni, Mag was allowed to sing for him, and it was at that point that she signed away her life. In return for state of the art digital corneas, which would allow her to see for the first time in her life, Mag would become a singer for the company's Genetic Opera. She would be the "Voice of GeneCO", and the public spokeswoman for the company. For years she sang under contract to GeneCO as Blind Mag, promoting the company and its hurtful practices, hiding its less savory, dangerous side beneath the public sheen of her performances and spokemanship. She became the world's number one soprano, and a global star. Marni eventually married Nathan Wallace after breaking things off with Rotti, and Mag was named godmother to Marni's unborn child. When Marni died of a mysterious "disease", Mag was told that Shilo had died with her. For the next seventeen years, she would continue to work under GeneCO's contract, and under the assumption that the infant Shilo was dead, along with her mother.
Finally, after so many years, Mag chose to end her contract with GeneCO, planning the Genetic Opera's newest performance would be her last, at the cost of her eyes, which would be marked for repossession. At an event for the opening of the new GeneCO opera house, Mag was introduced to someone she never thought she would meet - seventeen year old Shilo Wallace, her goddaughter, alive and well, and apparently a very big fan of hers. The meeting was monitored by Rotti, and as a result Mag was unable to really talk to Shilo much at all. Later that evening, before she was due to go to the Opera, Mag chose to stop by the Wallace home and speak to Shilo, telling her of her connection to Shilo's mother and that she was the girl's godmother. The reunion was interrupted, however, when Nathan Wallace returned early, and after an argument over his constant supervision and imprisonment of Shilo, Mag was thrown out of the house.
Before the Opera, Mag made a slight detour on the way to the opera house, stopping in the graveyard to place a flower on Marni's tomb, even as she came to terms with the fact that after her final song that evening, she would lose her eyes, and quite possibly her life. After Amber Sweet's disastrous debut at the opera, Mag sang her final aria for GeneCO - "Chromaggia", suspended on wires above the elaborately dressed stage, broadcast all over the world for all to see. Ending the song with the lines "Chromaggia, come take these eyes! I would rather be blind!", she used the sharp talons of her costume to gouge out her own eyes, in front of an astonished audience. She would rather take her own sight than let GeneCO and Rotti's repo men do it for her. Angry at her public denouncing and destruction of GeneCO's property (her eyes), Rotti cut the wires suspending Mag, and she fell to her death, impaled on the iron fence that decorated the stage.
